The 鈥淎frica: See for Yourself鈥 campaign’s purpose is compelling. As Africa emerges as the fastest-growing continent, projected to represent 1 in 4 people globally by 2050, understanding African perspectives is imperative. The campaign launched in September 2023 and is anticipated to run through 2024. SIT’s Africa study abroad programs boasted an impressive 48% increase in enrollment in both spring and fall this year. This attests to the effectiveness of the campaign strategies to resonate with its target audiences, driving outcomes.

The campaign employs a wide range of mediums and communication channels, from traditional print and digital advertisements, flyers, and brochures to social media, email marketing, landing pages, podcasts, news articles, and blogs. This comprehensive approach reflects a strategic deployment of resources to ensure maximum impact and engagement.

SIT has also organized in-person workshops for university faculty and study abroad advisors, allowing for real-time interaction on the topic of Africa. The combination of online and in-person strategies showcases SIT’s dedication to reaching targeted audiences through varied and innovative means.

Aspiring digital storytellers will be excited to learn about SIT Study Abroad鈥檚 newest offering, one of 46 programs enrolling now for fall 2024. On , SIT students will have access to advanced multimedia studios at Universidade Aut贸noma de Lisboa (Autonomous University of Lisbon) as they explore a range of ways to communicate and narrate across cultures.

Based in the dynamic and culturally rich city of Lisbon, SIT鈥檚 partnership with the university gives students access to state-of-the-art television and radio recording and editing equipment under the guidance of media and arts professionals.

The course is applicable to a range of disciplines as the lines between art and commerce, producer and consumer, content creator and audience are increasingly blurred in today鈥檚 media landscape, where media artists, journalists, designers, and content creators must work across mediums, platforms, and cultures. In the private sector, too, corporations rely on user-generated content campaigns and consumer communities to create and market new products.

According to the program鈥檚 academic director, Dr. Goran Jovanovic, 鈥淎I and machine learning are drivers of massive social and economic change but also are drivers producing new trends with seemingly unstoppable decision-making power over the destinies of citizens, businesses, and states.鈥

鈥淭hese movements have emerged to consolidate neglected rights, raise awareness of political and social conflicts, show discontent, and advocate for the rights of minorities and disenfranchised identities,鈥 according to Academic Director Dr. Victor Tricot. 鈥淭his voluntary gathering and collective action acts as a catalyst for broad social change or transformation and has become a hallmark of Spanish politics.鈥

The Role of Education in Post-Conflict Kosovo: A proposal for an analysis of how experts understand the role that education has played in peacebuilding

This study seeks to answer the following research question: What is the relationship between Kosovo’s education system and the conflict between Kosovo and Serbia? The researcher interviewed five individuals: one Bosnian, one Serbian, two Albanian Kosovars, and one Romani Kosovar. The results showed that education played many roles before, during and after the conflict between Kosovo and Serbia. Kosovo鈥檚 education system has historically been used as a tool to promote the political agendas of competing governments, whether that be the Albanian Kosovars, the Serbs, or that of the United Nations. The combination of the existing research and the data collected through the interviews created a strong foundation in understanding the role of education in the conflict between Kosovo and Serbia.

SIT carefully balances immersive learning with student safety and security. Our unique program structure envelops students in trusted local communities, grounds them in the local culture, and helps them navigate their new surroundings.

While away, students have 24/7 access to SIT鈥檚 Student Health, Safety & Well-being team, which includes experts in risk management, crisis response, mental health, disability services, and global health. This team works closely with our field-based program staff to ensure that policies and program-specific plans meet current global health and safety realities.

SIT conducts thorough program risk assessments to establish clear crisis management protocols and detailed safety guidelines. These protocols are part of the regular training of our field-based teams. We share standards regionally and across our extensive global portfolio of programs.

Socioeconomic, political, environmental, and medical conditions vary widely across the countries in which we operate. U.S.-based and in-country staff evaluate situational information from a wide variety of sources including U.S. and local governments, contacts in nongovernmental organizations, international and local media, and our own network of contacts within each country.

91精品 (SIT) is shocked and saddened to hear news of the earthquake in Morocco, where we have deep community partners and many staff, faculty, and, currently, three student groups on the ground. We are relieved to be able to report that all SIT personnel and students are safe. At the same time, we mourn the loss of life and tragedy that so many are experiencing at this moment.

Since Friday, SIT teams in Morocco and the United States have been busy supporting each other, our students, and our partners and communities. Our faculty and staff in Rabat and Casablanca are grateful for the gracious expressions of support and kindness they have received from colleagues across our institution and beyond. Our faculty have also been reaching out to our program partners, including NGOs and academic colleagues from the impacted areas, to ask what we can do to support them at this incredibly difficult time. Our students have embraced the bottom-up feeling of popular solidarity across the country.

The Moroccan state has long experience managing crises, including previous earthquakes in Morocco. Moroccan emergency intervention forces have taken part in several natural catastrophes relief missions in the region including the recent earthquake in Turkey. A crisis management cell presided by King Mohammed VI has issued guidelines outlining immediate and mid-term measures for the reconstruction of the devastated villages. A bank account has been set to collect donations, and Moroccan residents abroad are mobilizing to help with the reconstruction efforts. As a sign of international solidarity and hope for rapid remediation, the International Monetary Fund and World Bank will continue with their planned annual meeting in Marrakech October 9-15, 2023, and which is expected to bring 14,000 high-level participants.

Many of the roads leading to mountainous villages that were closed by rubble have been re-opened, but a few areas near the epicenter of the earthquake in the High Atlas Mountains remain difficult to access. Military forces are on site to provide shelter, water, food, and health care for those in the mountains and an air-bridge was established to provide relief to the survivors in areas yet difficult to access. The challenge is for the reconstruction to be completed before winter snowfalls.

SIT is working closely with our student groups, who are confronting firsthand the importance of local and international solidarity as well as the impact of climate change, transnational support networks for disenfranchised communities, and relief and crisis management from a Global South perspective. We acknowledge that the context of this reflection is difficult, and emotional health support resources are being put in place for all who need them.

Our thoughts, energy, and support are with the people of Morocco.

The U.S. Government鈥檚 Global Food Security Strategy and the Effectiveness of Agriculture-led Growth through the Perspectives of Climate Change and Sustainability

The United States Agency for International Development鈥檚 (USAID) Global Food Security Strategy Fiscal Year 2022-2026 addresses food security in developing countries. The U.S. Global Food Security Strategy set forth by USAID lays forth a strategy for increasing food security in 12 targeted low-income and developing nations. It is crucial to examine how well the USAID policy does this with consideration of climate change, sustainability, and socioeconomic well-being, given the fact that climate change impacts and predictions are now affecting food systems at all stages, from growth through production.

Decolonizing WASH Practices Between National Policies and International Standards:  A case study in Tanzania

The international community has developed guidelines and standards for the maintenance of water and sanitation (WASH) in states from the end of the 20th century to present and have often been criticized for their lack of contextual adaptations in the standards that states are expected to implement universally. The research explored how international standards on WASH have applied decolonized methods of interventions to guide the development of culturally relevant national policies. Tanzania was chosen as a case study to conduct a comprehensive review of the states鈥 integration of international standards within their policies through a decolonial perspective. Tanzania was found to be a model state with strong policies and campaigns that incorporated international standards through culturally adjusted practices that focus on the behaviors of Tanzanian communities. This research contributes a greater understanding to the field of the necessity for international organizations to utilize decolonized practices through recognizing cultural differences in aid projects, and to highlight how a state can successfully incorporate the standards from the international community.

Responding to Disproportionate Skin Cancer Rates in Adult Men Aged 18-60

Skin cancer is a deadly disease that kills significantly more men than women every year. At the same time, women are more than twice as likely to apply daily sun protection factor (SPF) than men. This research study explores how key stakeholders within the skin care industry have responded to the data showing increasing disparities between male and female skin cancer rates. Findings indicated that most men were consciously unaware that skin cancer affected them at higher rates that it did women. By increasing visibility of the issue, dismantling harmful gender stereotypes, and conducting further intersectional research, men will be more likely to understand the relevancy of good skin protection behaviors, and institute preventative measures to mitigate their overall risk of dying from skin cancer.

Using Community Organizing Best Practices to Re-Design the DART Organizers’ Institute

This capstone project explores three approaches to community organizing from three different scholar-practitioners. It begins with the father of grassroots organizing, Saul Alinsky鈥檚, and his neighborhood- and congregation-based approach, followed by Alicia Garza, the founder of the international Black Lives Matter movement. It ends with author and organizer adrienne maree brown鈥檚 Emergent Strategy approach. This paper will synthesize all three approaches, ultimately identifying four recommended approaches to community organizing: power, motivation, emotion, and centering impacted voices. The four recommended approaches will be used to evaluate the new organizer training (Organizers鈥 Institute) for the Direct Action and Research Training (DART) Network, and then to re-design the initial week of the Organizers鈥 Institute.

Sustainable Energy Distribution Methods at the Azraq and Za鈥檃tari Refugee Camps, Jordan: A refugee perspective

The looming climate change crisis requires research and development of mitigation strategies to protect those most vulnerable. This study uses semi-structured interviews to capture the refugee perspective of the successes and shortcomings of large-scale solar farm projects installed at the Azraq and Za鈥檃tari Syrian refugee camps in the west and north of Jordan, respectively. Results suggest that at both camps the current renewable energy systems are deeply flawed with limited hours with rampant distrust among camp residents in the management of the solar farms. Women, students, and those afflicted with illnesses are the most impacted by the energy limitations but all refugees face difficulties that are exacerbated by the region鈥檚 increasing temperatures which are linked to climate change. Azraq and Za鈥檃tari serve as case studies to inform future research on solar energy systems in temporary settlements to prepare for the imminent climate refugee crisis.

The Impact of Exercise and Sports on the Psychosocial Well-Being of Syrian Refugee Youth

Psychosocial well-being is a concept that encompasses mental health and the psychosocial health of an individual. Recreational sports and physical activity have been used to promote health and overall well-being of individuals. The main aim of this study is to understand the impact that exercise and sports have on the psychosocial well-being of Syrian refugee youth in Jordan. The results conclude that there is a positive connection between sports and exercise and how it affects and benefits the psychosocial well-being of participants who actively and routinely participated in these activities. This study hopes to contribute to the advocacy of incorporating sports and exercise into mental health programs and interventions for vulnerable youth populations. It is recommended to include females and do further research into how Syrian youth refugees can advance in their sports journeys.

Navigating Real World Conditions: M&E in USAID Projects

This capstone asks the following question: What shared challenges do USAID evaluators face when evaluating programs in the same region on similar topics? This research aims to inform this question through a comparative review of six evaluations published in the past five years of USAID projects in Latin America on the themes of rule of law, governance, and democracy building. Evaluations review program goals and actual outputs to determine effectiveness of a program and develop lessons-learned for future programming. However, this evaluation process occurs in real-world settings that inevitably present challenges to data collection. I find that the primary challenges faced by evaluators in the sample include insufficient program documentation, difficulty contacting stakeholders, political upheaval, and concerns regarding the accuracy of data collected. This paper contributes to the field of monitoring and evaluation by exploring on a small-scale the real-life USAID evaluation methods and challenges.

No Integration Without Employment: Asylum-Seekers in Serbia and their search for work

Employment is traditionally viewed as an integral component of refugee integration. Previous research suggests that for refugees, employment benefits psychological well-being, provides economic security, and develops social networks. The current research explores the dynamic between integration and employment for asylum-seekers and refugees in Serbia. It seeks to understand the difficulties these displaced populations face finding employment and why they remain in a country which is traditionally viewed as a transit country into the European Union. Due to waiting periods imposed by the Serbian government, and a general institutional lag, asylum-seekers are unable to fully participate in the Serbian labor market when it would benefit them most. Those who do find stable employment are most likely to remain in Serbia and build a life. The current research discovered that the reciprocal relationship between integration and employment in Serbia is currently fractured. Only by shifting public policy and investing in refugee integration can this relationship be mended.

Common Pool Resource Management and Conflict Resolution: A case study of two self-governed irrigation schemes in Ntcheu, Malawi

Contrary to conventional common-pool resource (CPR) theory 鈥 where it is presumed that strong central states must be the primary actors in regulating the commons 鈥 self-governed CPR theory is a method that enables the appropriators themselves to be the primary actors in designing and managing a given CPR. Irrigation systems are one on the most common examples of CPR sharing. Using Elinor Ostrom鈥檚 theory on self-governed CPR management and her Eight Design Principles, I examine the mechanisms by which two neighboring small-scale irrigation schemes in rural Malawi manage and govern common-pool water resources to contrast intra-scheme functions and the presence or absence of inter-scheme conflict and collaboration. Ultimately, this study demonstrates the coordination opportunities amongst neighboring schemes and local external authorities; specifically, in market integration, crop diversification and joint-scheme capacity building so other self-governed irrigation schemes can be more resilient to climate change, combat food insecurities and have enhanced conflict-resolution tools for self-governed water systems in rural Malawi.

Opportunity Discrimination: Resettlement efforts made by NGOs in the United States

Social identity plays a key aspect in life. This research tests whether homogeneity between refugees and their host communities correlates to the immigration process and resettlement success. The analysis helps form a conclusion that people want to help those who look like themselves before those who appear more foreign. This is related to the central theories of social identity and prejudice stemming from stereotyping. The analysis concludes that there is a level of positive correlation to homogeneity making immigration easier for certain in-groups of people. The data and conclusions from this conduction can be further used in future research of social identity and discrimination refugees face.

International K-12 Schools Seeking U.S. Accreditation: An analysis of the rationales involved in earning accreditation through the Western Association of Schools and Colleges

The international K-12 school market is growing fast, and new international schools are opening every year. Hundreds of those international K-12 schools seek out accreditation to help validate their institution鈥檚 authenticity. Accreditation allows potential students and families to trust that the education provided is legitimate according to a set of principles and standards provided by the accreditation organization. Colleges and universities, particularly those in the United States, where thousands of international students strive to be accepted, typically require students to matriculate from an accredited school. With this market growth comes a need for accountability, and therein lies accreditation. The United States has four regional accreditation organizations who accredit both domestic and international schools, but this study focuses on just one organization, the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). This qualitative study explores various rationales provided by participants using Grounded Theory as the method and institutional theory as the theoretical framework.

Goal is to infuse African perspectives into U.S. classrooms
A person walks along a shoreline in Zanzibar

Twelve U.S. college and high school educators will have the opportunity to learn African perspectives and witness African responses to climate change next summer, thanks in part to a U.S. Department of Education grant to 91精品 (SIT).

On the program Tuko Pamoja: Tanzanian Creativity and Perspectives in an Era of Climate Change, SIT will welcome six college and six high school educators to Tanzania-Zanzibar for a five-week experiential seminar in June and July 2024. In coastal Zanzibar, urban Dar es Salaam and mountainous Arusha, the educators will meet with researchers, practitioners, and professionals, including smallholder farmers and members of the Maasai community, to discuss livelihoods, coastal environments, food production, the arts, and education. The program will focus on how Tanzanian communities draw on their knowledge to confront the impacts of climate change.

鈥淪IT鈥檚 main goal is to infuse African perspectives into U.S. classrooms and curricula when discussing climate change,鈥 said Project Director Dr. Jonathan Walz. 鈥淲hether our participants are educators in humanities, social studies, languages or area studies, each will be able to reflect on the practices and social and environmental histories encountered in Tanzania as examples of African communities鈥 creative adaptions to the impacts of climate change.鈥

Educators will be able to bring these new and diverse perspectives back to their U.S. classrooms and students, integrate new material into their teaching, and help their U.S. students gain an international outlook and new approaches to problem solving of this critical global issue.

Dr. Said Graiouid, SIT Provost and Dean of Faculty

SIT Provost and Dean of Faculty Dr. Said Graiouid said, 鈥淓ducators will be able to bring these new and diverse perspectives back to their U.S. classrooms and students, integrate new material into their teaching, and help their U.S. students gain an international outlook and new approaches to problem solving of this critical global issue.鈥

Noting that SIT has the largest portfolio of programs on the African continent of any U.S. study abroad provider, Graiouid said the organization has redoubled efforts to generate more interest in the continent at a time when many U.S. students are opting to study in countries that feel more familiar to them, such as Europe and Australia.

Dr. Jonathan Walz

Tanzania can be seen as a microcosm of the African continent, Walz said, a place where diverse people are responding in creative and innovative ways to environmental changes.

鈥淐oastal and island environments such as Zanzibar bear the brunt of sea level change and the increased frequency of severe climate events, including mega-cyclones, typhoons, flooding, and coral bleaching. In such ecosystems, human communities face threats to water, food, and energy sources,鈥 he noted.

Walz is associate professor and chair of SIT鈥檚 graduate MA in Climate Change and Global Sustainability. He is also academic director of an undergraduate program based in Stone Town, Zanzibar, focused on coastal ecology and natural resource management. SIT also has an undergraduate program based in Arusha on wildlife conservation and political ecology, which is run by Dr. Oliver Nyakunga. Since 1990, more than 2,000 students have participated in SIT鈥檚 undergraduate programs in the country.

The full range of climate impacts and human creativity to understand and address these impacts can be observed in the country and by the responses of its communities, institutions, and organizations.

Dr. Jonathan Walz, SIT academic director and program chair, Zanzibar

Culturally and linguistically diverse, Tanzania鈥檚 communities have histories, perspectives, strategies, and expressions that capture and address contemporary climate and environmental changes in the 21st century. Tanzania is one of a very few countries in the world and only one of two countries in sub-Saharan Africa to have both glaciers and coral reefs within its territory, alongside an array of other types of environments.

鈥淚n an era of climate change, the full range of climate impacts and human creativity to understand and address these impacts can be observed in the country and by the responses of its communities, institutions, and organizations,鈥 Walz said.

According to the United Nations, Tanzania is one of the 10 fastest growing countries in the world in terms of its human population. With some 40 percent of territory designated as national parks or highly protected areas, the country faces increased pressures on land, water, food, and energy resources.

Participants in the five-week seminar can expect to gain practical and conceptual tools and develop creative artifacts that can support them in infusing African perspectives and creative responses to climate change into their curricula and pedagogies back home. They may also develop partnerships and connections that extend beyond the length of the seminar.

鈥淎 U.S. high school educator might also connect with a Tanzanian high school educator who would like to establish a virtual student exchange or a collaborative cross-country project,鈥 said Walz. 鈥淭he possibilities are myriad, as our program is designed with an intentional eye toward relationship building.鈥

The application period for Tuko Pamoja: Tanzanian Creativity and Perspectives in an Era of Climate Change is expected to open this fall through the SIT websites.

Tuko Pamoja: Tanzanian Creativity and Perspectives in an Era of Climate Change was developed with a grant of $142,442 from the Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad (GPA), U.S. Department of Education. That funding is 60 percent of the total cost of the project, with the remaining 40 percent funded by nongovernmental sources. The content of the program does not necessarily represent the policy of the Department of Education and should not be seen as an endorsement by the U.S. government.

Andrea Bordeau, left, and Jennifer Lee have joined 91精品.

BRATTLEBORO, Vermont鈥擲IT President Sophia Howlett has announced the addition of two new senior-level executives who bring a broad range of experience to global undergraduate and graduate programming at 91精品.

Howlett has named Andrea Bordeau as dean of Student Health, Safety, and Well-being, and Jennifer Lee as associate vice president for Enrollment Services.

鈥淭hese women bring a wealth of relevant experience and knowledge to SIT at a time when their respective fields are of particular interest and concern to students, parents, and our institutional partners across the country and around the world,鈥 said Howlett.

Bordeau has a decade of leadership experience in international student mobility and risk management. She is former president of Pulse: International Safety and Security Professionals in Higher Education and was recently elected to the steering committee of the Overseas Security Advisory Council.

She joins SIT from Vanderbilt University, where she was director of Global Safety and Security, providing emergency response for faculty and students overseas and overseeing all faculty-led programs. Prior to Vanderbilt, she was at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in a similar role.

Bordeau attended Union College in Schenectady, New York, and co-lead their program in Jamaica for several years. From there she went on to the University of Edinburgh for an MSc in African Studies with a focus on international development. Bordeau continued her graduate studies at Tel Aviv University with an MA in Middle East History and Security Studies. While based in the Middle East, she was a research fellow at the American University of Iraq, Sulimaniyah, and worked as a security analyst focused on Syria.

鈥淎s international and global education continues to recover from the pandemic, Andrea鈥檚 background will be invaluable in ensuring our students鈥 safety and security,鈥 said Howlett.

Jennifer Lee joined SIT in May as associate vice president for Enrollment Services. She brings nine years of experience at City University of New York (CUNY) School of Professional Studies, where she was associate dean of Enrollment and Student Services鈥攁 role that covered financial aid, admissions, academic advisement, and study abroad. Prior to that position, she was director of College Admissions and Access at CUNY鈥檚 Guttman Community College, which she helped to set up as a member of The New Community College Initiative.

Lee has a BA in psychology from SUNY Oneonta, and an MSW from New York University.

鈥淛ennifer brings a critical lens to SIT and years of incredible experience in both applied graduate and undergraduate studies at a time when, like colleges and universities across the country, we are confronting a new environment for international education and the potential upcoming challenges of the demographic cliff,鈥 said Howlett. “Jennifer will be providing leadership particularly as we develop our enrollment in graduate studies over the coming years.”

Linda Drake Gobbo

91精品 is pleased to announce that NAFSA: Association of International Educators has awarded SIT Professor Emerita Linda Drake Gobbo with . The status recognizes NAFSA members whose career achievements advance the goals of the association and of international education and exchange.

鈥淣AFSA鈥檚 strength derives from our members like Linda who, over the course of a career, has provided the association with formal and informal leadership, encouraged collaborative dialogues, and promoted knowledge creation to strengthen and serve the field,鈥 said Dr. Fanta Aw, executive director and CEO of NAFSA. 鈥淥ur community has relied on leaders like our Life Members for inspiration as we educate, advocate and innovate in international education. The dedication, effort, and advocacy of these committed members has been essential to the association鈥檚 success for over 75 years.鈥

During her more than four decade-long career in international education, Drake Gobbo taught and advised close to 1,000 students at SIT Graduate Institute and led the faculty team that developed the field鈥檚 first graduate degree. In 2019, she was named SIT professor emerita. Throughout her career, she has maintained a strong connection to NAFSA and the opportunities for collaboration with other professionals in the field.

… In my favorite NAFSA activities鈥攖he Academy for International Educators, the Teaching, Learning, and Scholarship knowledge community, and the Management Development Program鈥擲IT alumni figure prominently.

Linda Drake Gobbo

Drake Gobbo was a lead designer and co-trainer of NAFSA鈥檚 first Academy for International Education, now in its 20th year. She assisted in the development of the five knowledge communities (KCs) structure, and later was the first individual elected to the Teaching, Learning and Scholarship KC chair stream. She was a trainer and program re-designer with the Management Development Program, most recently helping pivot to an online format at the onset of the pandemic.

Drake Gobbo said she is honored and humbled by the lifetime recognition. “My work with NAFSA provided an opportunity to engage in something I really loved to do and to work with some extraordinary people while doing it. Of course, SIT students and alumni have benefited from my activities within NAFSA over the years. Indeed, in my favorite NAFSA activities鈥攖he Academy for International Educators, the Teaching, Learning, and Scholarship knowledge community, and the Management Development Program鈥擲IT alumni figure prominently.”

Drake Gobbo’s work has been acknowledged by NAFSA鈥檚 Region XI with the 2014 Sally Heym Award, the 2010 Recognition of Service Award, and the 2005 Distinguished Service Award. Although she retired from full-time work in 2022, Drake Gobbo continues to consult and present in the areas of strategic planning, internationalization, and curriculum development.

Dr. Sora Friedman, chair of SIT’s International Education MA programs, said Drake Gobbo has been her advisor, mentor, and colleague. “I can think of no one who is as qualified for this award as Linda. She is the personification of the IE professional who both advanced the impact of the association and field, and touched hundreds if not thousands of international educators.

NAFSA life members become eligible for nomination at the announcement of their intended retirement from professional responsibilities in the field of international education. Life membership is not automatically granted to those who attain emeritus status; each recipient must be nominated by colleagues for their achievements. Life members receive regular membership privileges and a waiver of annual dues and annual conference fees in perpetuity.

The 2023 Life Members will be recognized for this honor during the NAFSA 2023 Annual Conference and Expo later this month.  The complete list of 2023 NAFSA awardees is available at .

NAFSA is the largest and most comprehensive association of professionals committed to advancing international higher education. The association believes that international education advances learning and scholarship, fosters understanding and respect among people of diverse backgrounds and perspectives, is essential for developing globally competent individuals, and builds leadership for the global community.

Education Policy and Practice in Nepal: An Exploration of Education Quality in Private Primary and Secondary Education in Context of a Decentralized Education System in Kathmandu, Nepal
Tashina Tamara McNeil, Global Masters International Education

As a strategy for improving the country鈥檚 education sector and meet national development initiatives, the government of Nepal has implemented decentralization measures. Similarly, the government has committed to the Sustainable Development Goal 4, the premise of which is ensuring by 2030 that all Nepalese school-aged boys and girls have access to quality education. Decentralization, as defined, is the transfer of authority over school management to local governments, the private sector, and local communities. Decentralization, however, is not a panacea for all and when incorrectly implemented the consequences can be deleterious. This study sought to answer this research question: In the context of a decentralized education system, what is the quality of primary and secondary education in private schools in Kathmandu, Nepal? The findings of the study indicate that school environments lacking proper administrative leadership, teacher support, educational resources, and professional development opportunities compounded with poor classroom environments negatively impact the quality of education schools provide.

System Support for Early Grade Teacher Mentors in Cambodia
Jana Scislowicz, MA in Intercultural Service, Leadership & Management

The early primary education system in Cambodia is working to expand its teacher mentoring network. This quantitative and qualitative study examines the motivational factors of school-based early grade literacy mentors and master mentors who have played these roles in a pilot program implemented by a United States Agency for International Development-funded project during the 2021-22 academic year in Cambodia. The study finds that mentors are motivated to perform the mentoring roles for intrinsic reasons such as improving student education and peer learning. It also finds that there are areas of improvement for mentor selection, workload assignment, financial remuneration, and recognition for the mentor network to successfully scale-up to the entire nation.

SIT alumna of Pomona College has earned the coveted for her independent research on maternal mortality, which she conducted while on SIT鈥檚 program.

The award recognizes meaningful, rigorous academic projects that occur as part of education abroad programs. It includes a $500 cash prize.

Henderson鈥檚 research presentation was titled, 鈥淎 Retrospective Analysis of Maternal Mortality in Kisumu, Kenya from March 2021 to March 2022: The Effects of Proximal and Distal Factors on Maternal Outcomes.鈥 She said her senior thesis at Pomona will be another iteration of her study.

鈥淸Kiya] distinguished herself through her critical analyses of the abstracted data during the one-year time study period,鈥 said SIT Kenya Academic Director Dr. Steve Wandiga. 鈥淥verall, her excellence in academics and [as a] team leader among her peers was outstanding.鈥

Henderson, who is from New Orleans, is an Africana studies major completing pre-med coursework. She plans to work in maternal and fetal medicine and to open her own practice focusing on holistic health care for black and brown women. Currently, she serves as a study abroad peer mentor at Pomona College.

She chose the SIT program because it represented 鈥渢he perfect marriage between my two main interests” and said the independent research component of the program was important to her.

Kiya Henderson presents her research during a virtual awards ceremony.

During a March 16 virtual awards ceremony, Henderson said she chose to research maternal mortality because it is one of the major causes of death among women of reproductive age. 鈥淪pecifically within the United States, black women are two to three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than their white counterparts.鈥

Asked about one of the most impactful moments on her program, she said,鈥淔or a long time, I knew that I wanted to work in medicine but I wasn鈥檛 sure specifically where I wanted to work, and as I learned more about maternal mortality within the U.S.  that influenced my decision to work in maternal medicine. So being in [the women and children鈥檚 health section in Kisumu County Referral Hospital] for the very first time 鈥 I had this feeling that this is what I鈥檓 supposed to be doing; this is where I鈥檓 supposed to be,鈥 she said.

Henderson will be recognized on March 24 during the 19th Annual Forum Conference in Seattle.
