Storytelling & Social Change: An Interview with Maria Agui Carter, Award-Winning Filmmaker, Writer & Activist

Join us for an interview with International Honors Program alumna (1985-86) Maria Agui Carter, the founder of and a professor of Media Arts at Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts. This conversation reflects on Agui Carter鈥檚 journey growing up as an undocumented immigrant who became an influential filmmaker, writer, and professor, and delves into her creative work and goals for storytelling that impacts social change. Agui Carter鈥檚 recent work includes (click for short trailer, shown in the recorded webinar), winner of a 2014 Erik Barnouw Award for best historical films in America. She is also the director of the PBS Kids series SCIGIRLS, which was nominated for a 2019 Daytime Emmy. Agui Carter is now shooting , a documentary project about Patricia Esparza, a woman who was imprisoned for the murder of her rapist by her boyfriend. In development, is her magical realist feature script SECRET LIFE OF LA MARIPOSA, a fable on immigration and climate change based on her experiences growing up.

Identity, Privilege, and Power: Activities for Decolonizing Study Abroad

Join the SIT Custom Programs team for this interactive, 90-minute skill-building session focused on identity, privilege, and power. Together we will investigate the practical activities that can be integrated into short-term and faculty-led programming to help students鈥攁nd ourselves鈥攖hink critically about issues of positionality while studying abroad. You will walk away with experience using activities that can help your students move towards achieving a decolonial mindset. Participation will be capped at 16 participants to ensure intentional engagement, with priority given to study abroad professionals and faculty who work on faculty-led programming.

The Logic of the In-Visible: Decolonial Reflections on the Change of Epoch

 

In this conversation, the critical scholar Dr. Taieb Belghazi of SIT and the leading decolonial theorist Dr. Walter Mignolo of Duke University will engage with postcolonialism and decolonial thought and provide a critical reading of major decolonial concepts such as Modernity/Coloniality, the Colonial Matrix of Power, Delinking, Gnoseology, and Aesthesis. From these introductory philosophical reflections, they will then revisit the concept of globalization and offer a decolonial reading of current events, namely, COVID-19, the Black Lives Matter movement, and the crisis of democracy.
